Flower Arranging Origins
The ancient Egyptians were said to be the one who first practiced flower arranging. That was way back 2,500 B.C. Indications of this is found in Egyptian’s carved stone relief and walls painted with decorations.
According to records, ancient Egyptians consider flower arrangement as a vital part of their culture. Intricate flower crafting were said to be used during burial ceremonies and for parades. Also, they were considered as table centerpiece where flowers were put in a vase. Just like today, flowers already had meanings embedded to them at that time. For ancient Egyptians, lotus, for instance, has a sacred nature since it is associated with their Goddess Isis. Thus, most of their designs include lotus.
Then came the Greeks and the Romans turn in the art of flower arrangement. For the two, flowers also had symbolic meanings; most of them were associated with their gods and goddesses. In terms of flower crafting, Greeks and Romans prefer placing them in wreaths and garlands. The two are said to select flowers to be arranged according to the shape, color and form.
In the East side of the world, this art of flower crafting was also existent during the ancient times. It was said to be the Chinese who first show signs of this wonderful art. It can be traced back to 207 B.C. During the Han era, flowers played an essential part in religious teaching and religious ceremonies. Buddhists, Taoists and Confucians practiced offering flowers at their altars during the 618-906 A.D. Just like the Egyptians, the Romans and the Greeks, they also carried symbolic meanings in China. Different arrangements were chosen for the symbolic meaning they bring. For instance, peony, dubbed as king of flowers, is a symbol of wealth, fortune and high position in the Chinese context. The Chinese practice of adorning temples with flowers is said to influence the Japanese. In Japan, there is a specific term used for flower arranging – Ikebana. It dates back 500 years ago. Ikebana is considered as an art form for the Japanese which again has religious influence. Throughout time it has evolved and now as we can see, it is one of the most popular styles of this flower arts.
Flower arrangement flourished late in most European countries. It was only in the Renaissance and baroque period that this art became prevalent in Europe. But it was then that the traditional style of flower crafting, as we know today, begun. Certain flower arrangement principles were then practiced. Usually, they are placed in containers made of marble, bronze and heavy Venetian glass.
Today, there are many types of flower arrangements. Contemporary designs are usually combinations of the arts of flower craftmanship that developed throughout the history.
