While a computer basically has a microprocessor in it, people think of it as a way to input information using a mouse and a keyboard. They also believe that it simply processes the data that they input in it somehow and produces a result on the screen. However, what they do not know is that there are different types of computers in this world. Here are some types of computers.
The personal computer
The personal computer can be defined as a machine that has been developed or designed for personal use by a single individual. Even though a Mac is also a personal computer, many still continue to associate personal computers with the one that has Windows as its operating system. Personal computers were originally known as microcomputers since they were built smaller in size as compared to the personal computers that are currently in use by most businesses.
A personal computer that is not designed to be transported is called a desktop computer. The expectation that you will be set up at a permanent location comes with desktop computers. Most desktops offer storage, power, and versatility for a cost lesser than their portable cousins.
These are also known as notebooks. These computers integrate the keyboard, display, the trackball, the processor, the memory, and the hard drive all in one unit that is battery operated or that runs on electricity and these are slightly larger than an average notebook. However, they are portable unlike desktop computers and personal computers.
Back in the day, you could find that mainframes were huge and filled an entire room. Even though the size of computers has diminished today, the power of the modern computers has increased twofold. As this has happened, the mainframe computers have fallen out of favor with the enterprises that initially ran these servers. You can still hear the term mainframe today in enterprises, even though it is not in use.
Today, you can get computers in tablet phones. You can get a variety of tablet phones from the market. These are compact in size and come in a wide range of sizes and colors. You can carry them to any place you like without having to worry about whether or not they would work well. In fact, these computers have more features in one as compared to the other computers. There are also devices known as “phablets” since they are a combination of phones and tablet computers.
The Different Types of Computer Mouses
The computer system that we use today is made up of several components such as the desktop unit, monitors, motherboard, keyboard and mouse. Each of these components is important in its own way, a computer is unable to function without a motherboard, a user is unable to see what he/she is doing on the system without a monitor and a user is unable to input data into their system without a mouse and keyboard. This article will talk about the different types of mouses, while helping you find the most suitable one to meet your needs.
The mouse that we use on our computer is an extremely important component. Although, it is possible to use a computer without a mouse, the vast majority of us would opt for a mouse as it works to reduce a lot of stress and effort while accessing our PC. There are currently three types of mouses available on the market today, they are the optical, ball and laser mouse.
Out of these three different types of computer mouses, the ball variant was the first to enter the market. The ball mouses is mechanical in nature, it consists of a metal or rubber ball that is positioned inside the body of the mouse. The sensors that are inside the mouse, which are mechanical of course, work by detecting your movement by tracking the movement from the ball. These mouses need a mat in order to function correctly.
The optical mouse is pretty similar to the mechanical ball mouse; the only major difference between them is that the optimal mouse uses light instead of a rubber or metal ball to detect movement. This device also requires a mouse in order for it to function optimally.
The last type is the laser mouse, this mouse works on light that is emitted from the base of the unit; it’s this light source that detects the mouse’s movement. The laser mouse is favoured amongst all mouses since its laser is more responsive and easier to use.
The speed of the computer mouse is measured in dots per inch (dpi). Mouses with larger number support are able to function faster. If you’re a games player, then you’d more than likely be interested in a mouse with a high dpi, something that reacts quickly to the slightest of movements. A mouse with 800 dpi support is an excellent device to have, but most computer users would be satisfied with one that supported 400 dpi.
The computer mouses that you buy today come in a number of sizes and shapes. There are those that are larger in design made for people with large hands. Other types are significantly smaller, designed for smaller hands like a child. Whenever you’re shopping to buy a new mouse, it’s important that you make sure the device feels comfortable under your palm as you will be spending great amounts of time with it.
Types of Computer Networks
There are different types of Computer Networking that you may need for your home or office. To begin with you have the option of a wired or wireless computer network. These types of networks differ. A wired computer network will have copper or fiber optic cabling running between computers while a wireless network uses radio waves and/or microwaves to maintain communication channels.
A client/server network works by using client devices, typically PCs with network software applications installed that request and receive information over the network. The server device will usually store files and databases and includes more complex applications like Web sites. These devices often feature high-powered central processors, more memory and larger disk drives than the client devices. Two examples of client-server systems include Web browsers and servers.
In addition to these types of networks there are also types of area networks. These are categorized by their scope or scale. Some area network types include:
o WLAN – Wireless Local Area Network – a LAN based on WiFi wireless network technology
o MAN – Metropolitan Area Network – a network spanning a physical area larger than a LAN but smaller than a WAN, such as a city. A MAN is typically owned an operated by a single entity such as a government body or large corporation.
o CAN – Campus Area Network – a network spanning multiple LANs but smaller than a MAN, such as on a university or local business campus.
o Storage Area Network – connects servers to data storage devices through a technology like Fibre Channel.
o System Area Network – links high-performance computers with high-speed connections in a cluster configuration.
LAN and WAN were the original categories of area networks but through the evolution of technology we have been forced to keep adding more and more types due to the ever-changing field.
A LAN network will connect devices over a relatively short distance. This may include a building, school, or home that will contain a single LAN. Sometimes one building will contain a few small LANs and on the other hand a LAN may span a group of nearby buildings. A WAN spans a large distance. The Internet is the largest WAN as it covers the Earth. A network device called a router will connect LANs to a WAN. These are typically not owned by any one organization like LANs but are under a distributed ownership and management system.
Different Types of Computer Viruses
Different Types of Computer Viruses don’t come from way out in cyberspace. The genesis of the attack of the computer virus comes out of the bedrooms and living rooms of these cyberspace criminals.
Many of these viruses take on innocent-looking forms. They are set up very sneakily. The virus can be looking you directly in the face or doing their damage behind the scenes.
It’s best that you know how to get rid of a computer virus even if you don’t currently have a virus. Learn how to deal with them long before you get one. Because getting a computer virus will always happen at an inconvenient time.
The answer to battling the Different Types of Computer Viruses lies in anti-virus software. There is much software out there for anti-virus protection.
Select your anti-virus software based on the recommendations of independent testing agencies. Checkmark, AV-test.org and PC World magazine are among the most respected independent testers of anti-virus software.
Try and use more than one anti-virus program. Very few programs can detect all problems, but what one program misses, another may find and defeat.
It is commonly known that new viruses are found daily. Anti-virus program patches that find and destroy them are usually ready within hours or days.
However, in order to take advantage of these rapid movements you must update your computer consistently. If you don’t, you’ll still be vulnerable to the new viruses.
The Types Of Computer Memory
How can a computer be such an amazing gadget? To many people they just can’t be so amazed on how computers have changed the way we live. Computers can now be found in many sizes and shapes. Almost every home appliance seems to have their own mini computer located somewhere. From cars to buildings to almost every gadget there is, most of the time each one has a computer working to make them run and change the very way we live life.
First and foremost, the most important component of the computer is its processor. It is considered the heart of the computer that does all the calculating and processing. But with all that calculating and processing, the computer won’t be such a remarkable gadget if not for its amazing memory. Computer memory makes it possible to retain important information on a computer. Such data can be used again and again and retrieved when a certain stored data is needed. Without the computer memory, the processor will have no facility where to store its important calculations and processes, thereby making them useless.
There are different types of computer memory tasked to store different types of data. They also have different capabilities and specialties when it comes to storing necessary data inside the computer. The best known computer memory is the RAM, otherwise known as Random Access Memory. It is called random access because any stored data can be accessed directly if you know the exact row and column that intersect a certain memory cell. In this type of computer memory, data can be accessed in any order. RAM’s exact opposite is called SAM or Serial Access Memory, which stores data in a series of memory cells that can only be accessed in order. It operates much like a cassette tape where you have to go through other memory cells before accessing the data that you are looking for.
Other types of computer memory include the ROM or Read Only Memory. ROM is an integrated circuit already programmed with specific data that cannot be modified or changed, hence the name “Read Only”. There is also another type of computer memory called Virtual Memory. This type of memory is a common component in most operating systems and desktops. It helps the computers RAM to be freed up with unused applications to make way for loading current applications being used. It works simply by checking for data stored in RAM not being used recently and have it stored in the computer’s hard disk, thereby freeing valuable space in RAM for loading other applications. A virtual memory will make a computer think that it has almost unlimited RAM inside it.
Another type of computer memory that has made computers process tasks faster is what is called cache memory. Cache memory works simply by having current applications, calculations and processes stored in its memory instead of directly to the main storage area. When a certain process is in need of data previously used, it first will try to access the cache memory if such data is stored there before accessing the central memory storage area. This frees up the computer from looking for the data in a larger and bigger memory storage area and makes data extraction faster. Computer memory is in a constant state of development as more and more technologies are being developed. Who knows, maybe in the near future computer memory might also be fit for human consumption.
Different Types of Computer Repair Services
Proper computer maintenance is a must for a computer to perform well. Reliable computer repair and support is essential for it.
There are lots of repair centers providing these services. They provide online, telephonic, or on site services. Besides these different types of services, there are also computer repair centers that are better equipped in servicing different types of computers, servers, and laptops. Under the large umbrella called computer maintenance and repair, there are different methods of computer servicing. There are also service centers that are better at servicing particular types of computers.
Online computer repair is becoming increasingly popular because of the way in which its service is delivered. In this method the computer maintenance and repair, technicians access the system online, and rectify the problem. Both the client and the service provider are benefited by this arrangement. It frees the technician from the job of coming over to the client’s place, and frees the customer from the need of hauling the computer all the way to the service center if on site service is not available.
Computer maintenance and repair may be done through telephonic instructions also. Here, the client is instructed by the computer repair technician on the steps required to get the problem rectified. Similar instructions can be given through messenger chats, with or without the assistance of a web cam. Both these types of system assistance are helpful to clients who want to get the problem solved instantly.
On site computer repair is where the technician goes to the client’s location and provides the services. This is more necessary when part replacement is essential, and also in instances where the technical know-how of the user is limited so that it is not easy for him to do the job based on telephonic or online instructions.
Features of different types of computers vary, and some repair centers will be specialized in computer maintenance and repair of only specific brands or certain models of a computer. Most computer manufacturers have their own service centers, which are better attuned to repairing their products. Even among private service centers not related to any manufacturing company, some may be better at servicing desktops while others may be better at servicing laptops.
There are repair centers which do the computer maintenance and support of all types of Macintosh computers, Laptops, and PCs. These will be handy for users who may be having more than one brand of computers, and those who do not have the service center of their own brand of computer nearby. Still, before entrusting their computers to any computer repair center, users should ideally check whether their technicians are familiar with that particular brand of computer.
Custom building a computer may not exactly come under the rubric of computer repair. Still it is something that many repair companies undertakes to do. All that the customer needs to do is provide his requirements of processor speed, hard drive size, number of hard drives, graphic system, video system, or whatever else. Within a very reasonable time, he will have his made-to-order computer on the table. Not just that. He will also get from the makers all the tips necessary for proper computer maintenance. All the computer repair requirements of the custom built machine will also be undertaken by the company, which, of course, will not be much if the makers and the machine are good.
